Update 3/9/3014: Peyote is a challenge - that is for sure. But, I am so glad that I ended up with him. He needs lots of consistent time and patience. I wish I would of had more time over the past few weeks to pour into him - but I have had enough to see that he is something
special and super smart. Moving forward in these 100 days, I have enough of the big and traumatic events of my life this year behind me now that I am now able to pour much more time into Peyote. He learns very quick, is amazingly light, and ridiculously smart - he just simply needs more consistency - which I am now able to give him, thankfully. I have not ridden him yet - but plan to by the end of the week. I've had to approach Peyote without a time schedule - so far it's been clear that my time with him is best spent on the ground
gaining his trust more and more. To me, if I don't have his full and complete trust - I have no business getting on his back yet. I feel like Peyote and I have gained a lot of ground in this area over the last few weeks and he is almost ready.
In addition to trust, here are the skills Peyote has learned so far - Round penning, disengaging his hip, flexing, backing (4 different methods on the ground), turning on his hind end/moving his front end, lunging (including beautiful roll backs each direction), sending, standing tied, being saddled, and picking up his feet. He's become comfortable with ropes, plastic bags, flags, tarps and walking over the bridge. These are the skills that I would say he does to a B+ or A grade for me at this point. I've started the Jeffery's method with him as well as several other things but of course they all still need a lot of work. ;-p
